Where to start
The test is not hard, but it is wide. Most people who fail did not expect sectional charts, METARs, and Class E airspace to be on a drone test. Pick the path that matches where you are.
New to drones and aviation
Start with how certification works, then read the five study modules in order. Budget two to three weeks of evenings.
Start with the processI already fly, I need the aviation side
Airspace and chart reading, then weather. Those two areas are where experienced hobbyists lose the most points.

Take a full 60-question timed exam, review every missed question, then drill the weak category with a topic quiz.
Start a timed examWhat the test covers
The FAA publishes the weighting of each knowledge area on the UAG test. Operations is the biggest slice, but it is also the most intuitive. Airspace and regulations are where memorization pays off.
- Regulations15 to 25%
- Airspace and charts15 to 25%
- Weather11 to 16%
- Loading and performance7 to 11%
- Operations35 to 45%
The practice exam draws questions in these same proportions: 12 regulations, 12 airspace, 8 weather, 5 loading and performance, 23 operations.

What has changed lately
- Remote ID has been required on registered aircraft since September 2023, with enforcement since March 2024.
- Night operations and operations over people have been allowed without a waiver since April 2021 when the aircraft and pilot meet the new rules. The old recurrent test became free online training at the same time.
- Part 108, the proposed rule for routine beyond visual line of sight flying, reached final White House review in July 2026. It is a separate framework for automated operations. Part 107 itself is unchanged.
